How to Care for Your Pearls

Pearls are relatively soft gemstones. They also have low resistance to heat and chemicals. Therefore, pearls require special precautions when you wear or clean them. Proper wearing, cleaning, storage, and care for your pearl jewelry can help to maintain its look, and for you to enjoy wearing it for a long time.

Wearing Pearl Jewelry

  • When wearing pearl jewelry, avoid contacting the pearls with perfume, oil, hair sprays and makeups directly. We suggest you put makeups and perfume on first, before you put on your pearl jewelry.
  • Try to avoid wearing pearls under direct sunlight or heat for a long period of time.
  • Do not wear pearls when you are swimming or showering.

Cleaning Pearl Jewelry

  • Do not use commercial jewelry cleaners to clean pearls, as most the cleaners contain strong chemicals which can deteriorate the surface of pearls. We recommend you use soft cloth to clean pearls after wearing. If needed, you can damp the cloth with water to clean the pearls.
  • Do not use ultrasonic cleaner to clean pearls because it can damage the pearls.
  • Do not steam clean pearls, or use hot water to clean pearls, as pearls have low resistance to heat.
  • Do not use detergents, bleaches, powered cleaners, baking soda, or ammonia-based cleaners on pearls.
  • Do not use toothbrushes or abrasive materials to clean pearls.

How to Store Pearls

Pearls are composed of about 2 to 4% water along with calcium carbonate and an organic binder called Conchiolin. If pearls become dehydrated, they can get brittle and crack. When storing the pearls, you will need to place them in areas that are not close to heaters or direct sunlight. Pearls also need air for moist, so sealed plastic bags are not the best place for pearls either. Jewelry pouches or cloth bags are ideal for pearls. When you store pearls in jewelry boxes, or safe deposit boxes, remember to not leave them in a sealed box for too long. Pearls can be softer than the other types of gemstones, silver and gold, so try to protect pearls from the scratches.

All of Magori’s pearl strands or pearl bracelets are individually hand knotted to protect the pearls from rubbing against each other, or from scattering if the string should break.
